
Every other finish on this site adds a layer. Staining does not. It reacts with or soaks into the concrete and leaves the surface as concrete, with its variation, its history and its imperfections still visible.
That is the whole appeal and the whole limitation, and which of those it is depends entirely on your slab and your taste.
Acid stain and water-based stain
Acid stain
A solution of metallic salts in a mildly acidic carrier. It reacts chemically with the free lime in the concrete, and the resulting colour is a permanent mineral deposit within the surface.
The palette is limited: earth tones, browns, tans, terracottas, soft greens and greys. Nothing bright, and nothing pale.
The result is mottled and translucent, with genuine variation across the floor. Because it is a reaction, it depends on the cement chemistry, so two slabs treated identically come out differently. It cannot be precisely controlled and it cannot be reproduced.
It is extremely permanent, because the colour is a mineral deposit rather than a pigment layer.
Water-based stain
Fine pigment in a carrier that penetrates the surface rather than reacting with it. Much broader colour range including blues, greens and greys that acid cannot produce. More predictable and more uniform.
Less depth and less translucency than acid stain. It reads more like a coloured concrete and less like weathered stone.
Also more forgiving on newer or denser slabs that do not have enough free lime for acid to react with properly.
Why people choose staining
It cannot delaminate. There is no film on the surface to lose adhesion. Every failure mode discussed elsewhere on this site involves a coating separating from concrete, and staining removes that possibility entirely.
It keeps the character of the slab. On an older Birmingham porch or a converted industrial floor, the variation, the saw cuts and the marks are the reason to do it rather than the problem.
Moisture is less of an issue. A stained and breathable-sealed slab can let vapour through in a way a low-permeability coating cannot. On a slab with moderate vapour drive that is a genuine advantage.
It is usually cheaper than a full broadcast system, because there is much less material and fewer coats.
What it will not do
This is the important half.
It will not hide anything. Patches, previous repairs, oil staining, trowel marks, colour differences between pours, and every crack remain visible. Stain often makes them more visible, because the colour takes differently on repaired areas than on original concrete.
It cannot be sampled reliably. Acid stain in particular reacts with your specific slab. A test patch in a corner tells you roughly what to expect, and that is genuinely worth doing, but the floor will still surprise you somewhere.
It cannot be undone easily. Acid stain is in the concrete. Removing it means grinding the surface off.
It offers no protection on its own. The stain is colour, not a wearing surface. A sealer goes over it, and that sealer is what takes the wear and needs periodic renewal.
The sealer question
Stained concrete always needs sealing, and the choice of sealer decides how it behaves.
A penetrating silane or siloxane sealer soaks in, leaves no film, keeps the matte natural appearance and lets the slab breathe. Best where moisture is a consideration or where a natural look is wanted.
A film-forming acrylic sealer deepens the colour considerably and adds sheen. It looks richer. It also reintroduces the possibility of a surface layer wearing or, in wet conditions outdoors, going cloudy.
A polyaspartic topcoat over stain gives maximum durability and gloss, and effectively turns it into a coated floor with stained concrete underneath. That is a legitimate build and it is worth understanding that you have then lost the breathability advantage.
Where it suits Birmingham
Older porches on the bungalows around Forest Park, Crestwood and Avondale, where the concrete has decades of character and a uniform coating would look wrong on the house.
Converted industrial and warehouse space around Avondale and Parkside, where the existing slab is the aesthetic.
Interior floors in houses where a polished or coated look would be too contemporary for the building.
Patios where the owner wants colour without a plastic-looking surface, though outdoor sealer choice matters more here.
Preparation
The slab has to be genuinely clean and open, because anything on the surface blocks the stain and shows as a pale patch. Previous sealers, adhesive residue, curing compounds and paint all have to come off completely.
Grinding is usually involved, though lighter than for a coating, since the aim is to open the surface rather than to create a deep mechanical profile.
Any patching needs doing before staining, and it needs accepting that patches will take colour differently. On a floor where that matters, staining may be the wrong choice.
Honest advice
Stain suits people who want concrete to look like concrete. If you want a uniform, predictable, controllable floor, you will be happier with flake or quartz, and you should not fight it.
We do a test patch on anything acid stained, in a spot you can see, before committing the whole floor. It costs an extra visit and it prevents the only really bad outcome in this work, which is finding out you dislike it after four hundred square feet.
Common questions
Will it hide my cracks?
No, and it may highlight them. Stain colours what is there. If concealment is the goal, this is the wrong finish.
Can I pick an exact colour?
With water-based stain, roughly. With acid stain, no. It reacts with your slab's chemistry and the result varies across the floor by nature.
Does it peel?
The stain cannot, because there is no film. The sealer over it can wear and needs renewing periodically, which is a much smaller job.
Is it good for a garage?
It can be, particularly with a durable topcoat. Bear in mind it hides nothing, so oil drips and tyre marks show far more than on a flake floor.
Can you stain over an old coating?
Not until the coating is completely removed. Stain has to reach bare concrete.
Can I see a sample first?
On acid stain we do a test patch on your actual slab, which is the only meaningful sample. Colour charts are a starting point rather than a prediction.
