Quartz broadcast flooring in Birmingham

Coloured quartz aggregate instead of vinyl chip. It costs more, it wears harder, and it is the specification when a floor has to be both durable and genuinely cleanable.

Quartz broadcast sits between flake and a full industrial system. Where vinyl flake is a decorative chip lying on the surface, quartz is a graded, colour-coated silica aggregate broadcast into resin and locked in with further coats.

The result is a thicker, harder, more uniform floor with slip resistance built into the body of the system rather than added to the topcoat.

How it differs from flake

Hardness. Quartz is a mineral aggregate. It resists abrasion far better than a vinyl chip, which matters where there is rolling traffic or grit being walked in daily.

Thickness. A double broadcast quartz system typically builds considerably thicker than a flake floor, which gives it impact tolerance and a genuinely monolithic feel.

Uniformity. Quartz is graded to a consistent particle size, so the finished surface is even rather than variegated. Flake produces character; quartz produces consistency. Which of those you want depends entirely on the room.

Slip resistance. Built in, and adjustable by aggregate grade rather than by adding grit to a topcoat. This is why it dominates in wet commercial environments.

Cost. More than flake, less than a full urethane cement system.

Single and double broadcast

A single broadcast is one coat of resin with quartz thrown into it, then sealed. Thinner, cheaper, adequate for light commercial use.

A double broadcast applies the process twice, building substantially more thickness and a denser aggregate matrix. This is the specification for anywhere with real traffic or wet conditions, and it is what most commercial quartz floors actually are.

When comparing quotes, this is worth asking about directly. Two quotes both saying "quartz floor" can be describing systems of very different thickness and price for good reason.

Where it belongs

Commercial restrooms and changing rooms. Wet, cleaned aggressively, and needing genuine grip. Quartz with a coved base is close to the ideal specification.

Food preparation areas away from thermal shock. Where boiling water is not being dumped on the floor, quartz gives you hygiene and grip without the cost of urethane cement. Where thermal shock is present, see commercial kitchen flooring instead.

Healthcare and laboratory. Seamless, cleanable, chemically resistant, no joints for anything to grow in.

Veterinary and animal facilities. Constant washing down, urine exposure, and a need for grip that survives being wet.

Commercial entries and lobbies. Where grit is walked in every day and a flake floor would wear through the topcoat sooner.

Locker rooms and pool surrounds indoors. Wet feet, running, and a slip obligation.

Where it is overkill

A residential garage. Quartz costs more, and vinyl flake handles a domestic garage perfectly well while offering more decorative variety. Occasionally somebody wants quartz at home and there is nothing wrong with it, but it is a preference rather than a requirement.

A showroom where appearance leads. Quartz reads as functional and hygienic rather than luxurious.

Colour and appearance

Blends are made by mixing coloured quartz grades, and the result is a uniform speckled surface, close in character to terrazzo but without the polish.

Because the aggregate is graded, the finish is far more predictable than flake. What you see on a sample is close to what you get, at least in colour if not in scale.

Finish sheen is adjustable through the topcoat. A satin finish is usually the right answer in commercial settings: it hides marks better than gloss and looks better six months in.

Coving and detailing

Quartz systems are almost always specified with coved bases in wet environments, where the floor turns up the wall in a curve rather than meeting it square. That eliminates the junction where water and dirt collect and is what makes the floor genuinely washable.

Drain terminations, threshold details and the junction with adjoining floor types are the other places where a quartz installation is either properly finished or visibly not.

Preparation and installation

Same principles as any bonded system, and the same non-negotiables: mechanical preparation to an open profile, moisture assessment where the slab warrants it, and sound repairs before anything goes down.

Quartz installation is messier and more labour-intensive than flake. There is more material, more broadcasting, and between coats there is a sanding or scraping stage to knock back loose aggregate. That is part of why it costs more.

Cure times are longer than a fast polyaspartic garage system because of the number of coats, so it does not lend itself to overnight turnarounds in the same way.

Why it dominates in wet commercial rooms

Worth setting out plainly, because it explains why the same specification keeps appearing in restrooms, changing rooms and food areas across every sector.

A wet floor needs three things at once: grip that does not depend on a surface treatment wearing off, a seamless surface with no joints for bacteria to sit in, and the ability to take aggressive daily cleaning without degrading.

Quartz delivers all three from the same build. The grip is aggregate in the body of the system rather than grit in a topcoat, so it does not wear away with the first year of mopping. The system is monolithic, and with coved bases it turns up the wall so there is no floor-to-wall junction at all. And the resin matrix takes commercial disinfectants and machine scrubbing without breaking down.

A flake floor cannot match that combination. The grip is lower, the vinyl chip is softer, and the finish is decorative rather than hygienic in intent. In a domestic garage none of that matters. In a commercial restroom it matters a great deal, and that is the line between where each belongs.

Maintenance

Sweep or vacuum, wash with a neutral cleaner, and it takes machine scrubbing well, which is one of its advantages in commercial settings.

The topcoat is the wearing layer. In a heavy-traffic environment it can be abraded and recoated years later without disturbing the quartz body, which is a modest job compared with replacement.

Is quartz better than flake?

Is it slippery?

Is it worth it in a home garage?

Rarely necessary. Vinyl flake handles a domestic garage well and costs less. There is nothing wrong with quartz at home, it is just more than the job needs.

How long does installation take?

Longer than a one-day flake garage, because of the number of coats and the intermediate sanding stages. It does not suit an overnight turnaround.
